International Qualifications: Working as a Social Worker in Ireland
If you qualified as a social worker outside the Republic of Ireland, you must have your qualification recognised by CORU. CORU is Ireland’s regulator for health and social care professionals, including social work. You must also register with CORU before you can practise as a social worker in Ireland.

If CORU requires compensation measures
CORU may identify substantial differences between your qualification and the standards required to practise in Ireland. If this happens, you may be asked to complete one of two compensation measures:
Period of Adaptation
A Period of Adaptation is a period of supervised practice in Ireland. It may be suitable if you need experience in an area of practice not covered by your qualification.
Please be aware that placements can be difficult to secure. Many available placements are reserved for social work students, and employers may have insurance or vetting requirements.
Aptitude Test
An Aptitude Test assesses your professional knowledge in the areas identified by CORU. It may be suitable if you already have relevant knowledge or experience that was not fully demonstrated in your original application.
IASW and CORU cannot advise you which option to choose. Read CORU’s guidance on compensation measures before making your decision.
Join the IASW
Once you are registered with CORU, you can apply to join the Irish Association of Social Workers.
